Continue The Aloha Spirit Friday Nov. 19!

->> I don't know if the SS.COM Message Board God's will frown upon me for promoting this very worthy cause, but here goes anyway ....

I want to challenge everyone from Southern California to do something really COOL ... and something that will make you feel really good.

Please join me, Deanna and Emma at the Garrett Miho Foundation fundraiser and toy drive kick off this coming Friday, Nov. 19 on the campus of Loyola Marymount.

If you attended the recent Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau, we had a great weekend of photography that was educational, entertaining and inspiring. As I like to say, I plan and hold this event to give a little something back to photography. So those of you in So Cal ... let's continue that "Aloha Spirit" by helping our good friend Darrell and attend this very worthy fundraising event and give something back to our community.

Info and details are below ... and if you are busy that evening or are from out of the So Cal area --- why not do the really COOL thing and make a donation to the foundation.

Hopefully we can round up a good number of Sports Shooter members and have a good time together at a couple of tables!

(Hey ... how about I give away "Last Luau" special edition t-shirts to the first 10 Sports Shooter members who come up to me at the event and say "Hey Now Big Kahuna!")

Thanks again to everyone that attend and that helped make last weekend's Sports Shooter Workshop & Luau such a HUGE success ... let's see if we can spread that around and help this very worthy organization and event.

MAHALO!

Robert Hanashiro.

AN EVENING IN PARADISE
At 6pm on Friday, November 19, 2004, the Garrett Miho Foundation will
officially kick off their annual toy drive and fundraiser with "An Evening
in Paradise 3" - a Hawaiian Luau at University Hall on the beautiful campus of Loyola Marymount University.

The evening's festivities will include a Hawaiian buffet dinner from
Cherrystone's, Gardena, including Hawaiian favorites Kalbi, Kalua Pork and Honey Pineapple Chicken along with mac salad, chicken salad, gyoza, rice and other island favorites.

Live Hawaiian music will be performed by Kalika and hula performances by Halau Hula a Kawika laua'o Leinani, Halau Keali'i O Nalani and Hula Halau 'o Lilinoe ame Na Pua Me Kealoha. With special guests Rodney Kageyama and Rob Fukuzaki.

Guests are encouraged to bring an unwrapped, non-violent toy to the event.
The toys we collect will bring the joy of the holiday season to children
being served by our three partners - the Asian Pacific Women's Center, the Center for the Pacific Asian Family and Para Los Ninos. Mo ey raised will go toward our inaugural program, Project Blossom, as we continue to assist children of single parent households.

Our toy drive will continue for two weeks from November 19th through
December 4th. Those who are unable to attend the kick off fundraising event may also drop off their toy donations at select Washington Mutual branches.
Please check our website for the drop off location near you.

Tickets for An Evening in Paradise are $35 and may be reserved by calling
626.279.1199 or emailing the foundation office at info@theGarrettMihoFoundation.org.

->> Bert and my fellow ss.com members,

As a divorced father of two young sons I face difficult challenges every day in trying to raise my kids with my ex-wife in a stable co-parenting situation. For anyone who has been through this ordeal of having the "traditional family" fall a part it is not a lot of fun or very easy for the parents whether they are mom's or dad's. It is because of the foresight and kindness of people like Darrell and the others within the Garrett Miho Foundation that the children of single parents are able to take part in activities that otherwise money is not available for with in the "family" budget. This toy drive and fundraiser is an important event not only for the Garrett Miho foundation but for the children who are helped by it through their work with the Asian Pacific Women's Center, the Center for the Pacific Asian Family and Para Los Ninos. I urge those of you with the means to do so to please support it.

I had the pleasure of introducing myself to Darrell at the Luau. A year ago when he had learned that I was a single dad he reached out to me and told me about the foundation and urged me to use it. He reiterated it at the Luau and while some time in the future I plan to possibly apply for assistance sometimes my stubborn Irish pride gets in the way and it will not allow me to ask for help. Like every other caring, loving parent, I would rather put the needs of my kids ahead of mine but as we all know sometimes even those things that we wish we could provide for our children must be put aside. It is because of this foundation that children of single parents can enjoy a rich fullfilling childhood with activities that help them build self-esteem and interpersonal skills that they need in order to succeed in life.

If you have never met Darrell I urge you when you get a chance to introduce yourself to him, you will not be disappointed. For those of you lucky enough to call this man a friend count yourself as blessed. For those of you that need a little help along the way please visit the foundations website at
http://www.thegarrettmihofoundation.org/ and for those of you who can, please help. You just never know what some kid might grow up to be someday because of your generosity.

Rick

That is in my backyard. I probably will have a prep football playoff game to shoot (depends on who won today) that day and there is a volleyball game I might like to cover that evening at LMU. If I can't attend I will buy a ticket and somehow get something out there as I am just about a mile away from campus.

(Of course Mongo hasn't seen a Hawaiian plate lunch --- or dinner --- yet that he can refuse!!!)

Mongo says he is still in So Cal after hanging out at the Workshop & Luau 2004 and wrecking havoc with Louis at Samy's Camera this week. But he hopes to being around so he can attend Darrell's very cool fundraiser at Loyola Marymount.

I've been trying to convince The Photodude to fly back here ... but it looks like The 'Dude is tied up with some kind of documentary project south of the border for a week.

And Dirk --- You should come on by the fundraiser after the v-ball game. I'm sure the hula dancing will still be going on!

->> thank you bert, rick and dirk for your kind words and support.

as a non profit, there are many challenges we face in order to continue to do what we do.

an unstable economy makes fundraising more difficult. corporate america has reduced the type and number of contributions they make and individuals have less expendible income to donate.

being a small, grassroots organization dealing with a cause that isn't recognized as a major issue like aids, cancer, hunger or homelessness, makes our fundraising task that much more difficult because we don't get the same emotional response that causes many people to donate and corporate america likes to support the big name charities to basically boost their own ego.

but part of our mission is to raise public awareness to the needs of these children. we want to make people aware that extra curricular activities are important to a child's growth and many children do not have access to these experiences because their parent can not afford them.

we launched Project Bloosom in February of 2001 to try and level the playing field, so to speak. Project Blossom sponsors kids to play organized sports, take dance or music lessons or go to camp. these activities expose these children to role models and life lessons that allow them to blossom into well rounded young adults.

here are a few facts...
according to a study conducted by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in 1999...
there are over 11 million single parent househods in the US.
34.3% of single mother households live below the poverty level.
17.7% of single father households live below the povery level

1 out of every 4 children live in a single parent household and of those that live in a single parent household, over 36% live in poverty.

and according to the 2000 US Census...
$41,994 = the average median household income (single parent and married households combined)
$29,907 = the average single dad income
$20,284 = the average single mom

thanks you bert for helping spread the aloha spirit. i am grateful to people like bert who believe in what we are doing and are willing to go the extra mile to raise awareness and encourage people to help.

It's for a very good cause. And for those how think of such things, it is a tax - deduction.

"Brookies" should have their own challenge ... come out Friday to a very cool fundraising dinner (how can you pass up Hawaiian food???) OR start s Brooks fund on campus to donate to the Garrett Miho Foundation.

It's cool. And it'll make you feel good too!

See you there.

Darrell your organization really does amazing things, my wife and I were very happy to not only donate toys but attend the Luau. If someone asked how it was I would just have to say it was amazing the dancers, the food, even the silent auction were all great. My wife and I look forward to providing more support for you and your organization in the future.

Bert it was a pleasure meeting you and your family. I want to thank you for starting this thread and letting us all know about this great cause and letting us help support it.

Church had something going on tonight, and my film scanner kicked the bucket this after noon so that threw me way behind schedule on digitizing all my old chromes for stock. But o well the lord will provide. I have some cool toys to give away though. I need to contact the foundation and see where a drop point is for them. Don’t let me not being there keep you from having too much fun to night. See ya some time in the future.

->> To echo James ... the event Friday evening at Loyola Marymount was fabulous!

The Garrett Miho Foundation fund raising dinner was elegant, classy, had fabulous food, great items in the silent auction (for which James bid on and won a nice gift basket ... and Emma bid on several items that she ended up winning), unbelievable Hawaiian entertainment, wonderful people attending and working the event ... and did I say it had great food?

Seriously, the event was one of the best of its kind I have ever attend (and my family and I have gone to many charity benefits). This is a tribute to Darrell and the fine group of people that work hard for the foundation and the organizations it benefits.

In addition to James, it was great to see that ss.com members Dirk Dewachter and Myung Chun attended Friday evening's fund raiser.

I will be putting up a few happy-snaps in a day or so.

But the "Aloha Spirit" can continue ... just click on the link James posted above and see where to send your contribution.

For those of you that missed the Garrett Miho Foundation fund-raising luau last Friday at Loyola Marymount University, I have posted a gallery of happy-snaps from the event:
http://www.sportsshooter.com/bert/miho_findraiser/index.html

The Garrett Miho Foundation, named for Darrell's brother who passed away suddenly in 1999, aids children of single-parent households. This is a very, very worthy cause ... so if you haven't already donated or didn't attend the luau last Friday, please consider making a charitable donation to the foundation ... it's a great Christmas present to some children in need and it'll make you feel good!
http://www.thegarrettmihofoundation.org/

AND ... Thanks to all of you that have already expressed your generosity! You have all exhibited that "Aloha Spirit!"
