Batch Conversion: RAW --> JPEG
Robert Caplin, Photographer, Student/Intern

->> Does anyone know a way to batch convert Nikon RAW files (NEFs) into jpgs? I'm on a time crunch and opening my whole take one by one in PS is quite time consuming.

Photos were taken over a year ago w/ a D1H before RAW+Jpeg option was available.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

You can set up a batch in Capture 4 to do exactly that. I do it for every shoot.

When you bring up a batch, at the bottom of the box it gives you the option as to which file type you want to save. I create a second folder to save the jpegs. If you only change the file type the batch goes through fairly fast.

Are you using Photoshop CS? If so, give "Dr. Brown's Image Processor" a look. It's a very powerful CS-only script and runs much faster than an action. It allows you, among other things, to make batch adjustments to a group of RAW images (in PS-CS Browser) then convert them all at once to TIFF or jpeg or even PSD's.

If nothing else, watch the Quicktime movie that shows step-by-step screen images of how it works and what you can do with it. It's a little goofy, but full of useful information on the script.

It saves a ton of time if you shoot, it works on both Mac & PC....and it's free.

Incidentally, Russell Brown in Adobe's Creative Director.

Byron. I'm with you. Capture's Raw-to-JPEG batch command is so easy to use that I now shoot only Raw and no longer use camera's Raw+JPEG option.

While it's not a huge difference, it frees up some room for more shots on the CF card.

Joe.
