APA - Taking Rick Rickman's advice to heart and acting on it
Cameron Davidson, Photographer

->> Brad Mangin and discussed my starting a thread about APA and how attending an APA event it can help photographers with their business.

Rick's killer article on business hit a lot of people over the head. As it should. Photographers, in many ways, can be their worst enemy.

A group of us in DC got together this spring and started an APA Associate Chapter. (Advertising Photographers of America) - We are the associate chapter to New York. We formed the chapter because we felt that we needed a trade organization that was focused on the reality of the business and helped photographers to prosper without being confrontational to clients.

It is a pretty positive organization and has had a lot of success the past few years. It is growing because it offers what photographers need.

Ok - how does this helps photo-j and sportsshooters. Our first program is about estimating and why the lowest bid is not always the winner. The program is presented by Suzanne Sease, the former Senior Art Buyer for the Martin Agency and Carolyn Potts, a well known photographers rep in Chicago. Suzanne and Carol will talk about what you put in as much as what you leave out and how that affects the art buyer's decison to award you the assignment. They use real life examples that will amaze you: what it took to produce them - the range of fiqures quoted and why the were awarded. The campaigns range from highly styled shoots to photographs that closely resemble current editorial and photo-j images. Images that many Sportsshooter members could create.

If you are interested in learning more about the workshop and signing up - please go to:
http://www.apadc.com. If you're in the DC/Baltimore/Richmond area - this is well worth your time.

Suzanne and Carolyn are also available for career/portfolio consultations on the 28th and 29th.

The program is very inexpensive - five bucks for members and fifteen for all others. It is in Merrifield, Virginia (just outside the beltway)

->> Can you record the event and then web cast it? I would love to attend but I will not be in the area. If you need a server to make it downloadable from or if you need help making it web friendly I can do both.

Best,
James

Ssshhhh.... don't tell anyone but I use to work for a Video encoding company.

->> That is a good idea. I'll need to ask the two participants, the dc workgroup and apa national.

The second event for this new chapter will be a hoot. October 16th. An all-day Assistants bootcamp with three "outstanding" (to use a commom USMC expression) Drill Instructors. They're assistants who have worked for a long time and really have their act together. The program will cover everything from gear to professionalism and how to run your business.

I don't have the November event dates. I'll let you know when the November program is scheduled and what it will cover.

Thanks!

->> There's an additional way you can act on Rick's advice and it dovetails with Cameron's efforts in DC -- join professional organizations, whether they be APA, ASMP, NPPA, PPA, EP -- whatever -- and make an effort to attend local events -- building a network and thereby a community in your region is another terrific way of strengthening not only the industy, but your understanding of it. We all benefit with the sharing of information, knowledge and experience, so those who would avoid associating with their local peers out of fear that their "competition" might get the edge on them are missing the broader picture and will lose out in the long run.

For those students out there, most of these groups have a reduced student/assitant membership fee -- I know school is expensive and no one has any money, but these memberships are worth it and will ultimately pay off more handsomely than the double non-fat half-caf latte you might have to give up to join them....
