->> A few years ago, John Gay (for the US Navy and Sports Illustrated) won 1st prize in the 2000 World Press photo "Science and Technology" singles category with a similar photo of an F/A-18 Hornet. Gay's photo is more tighly composed, grainier, and shows the split-second event with a slightly more dramatic vapor cloud, and more muted contrast.
I'm impressed with the timing of the photo Mr. Kaczor has posted, but I also think the 2000 World Press Photo winner is very deserving of its award.

->> I was wondering if the trail followed along or if the "pop" was a stand still. From this video, the vapor pretty much trails the jet as it passes the sound barrier.

->> Below is the link to the closest version of the winning image that I could find online. Like Brian said I would be happy with the opportunity to capture either of the two images. There's just something that Gay's image has, (irony maybe? a photo conveying a peaceful feeling of a noisy event) that makes it a little more wonderous in my opinion.

->> They are both great images, but I agree with you Michael, Gay's image is stronger in my mind. The first thing that strikes me is the perfect shape of the vapor cloud and the fact that I can't see the tail of the airplane. That gives it a more surreal almost unbelieveable quality. I also like that Gay's shot is not a complete profile of the plane. There is a sense that the plane is travelling slightly diagonal across the frame, making it more dynamic when I look at the image. Just thought I'd share my take.
Nonetheless, two awesome captures of an incredible moment. |

->> Wesley,
I was doing an airshow earlier this summer, and they had an F-15 do some high speed passes. A couple times by, the plane had the vapor cloud going with it, so I asked the announcer about it when I was getting the pilot's name from him. He said that the vapor cloud will appear at different speeds, depending on the humidity and how fast in relation to the speed of sound the plane is traveling. He said that the vapor cloud will travel with the plane until it reaches the sound barrier, and then it disappears. |
