How many shooters have degrees? In what?
Colin Corneau, Photographer
Brandon | MB | Canada | Posted: 10:47 PM on 07.08.04
->> A discussion on the amount of photo grads being churned out nowadays on the WCNPA site (www.wcnpa.ca) got me to thinking about what role degrees and post-secondary education play in modern photojournalism.

Do you have a degree? In what? And do you think it's important to have one?

Personally, I think some life experience outside the confines of photojournalism is healthy and important...the ultimate litmus test should be if a shooter can shoot, but I think someone who brings, say...experience in an English degree or Fine Arts or something, then that should be welcomed.

Photography peaked my interest my JR Year. Took one Photo J class, which did not teach me a whole lot, but I did get to teach others, which was enjoyable. The class did help me grow in some areas though. I am now trying to persue photography full bore. It is my passion!!!

I agree with Colin thought, and education is important. It makes you a more well rounded and useful individual. Granted some may not be able to afford the luxury of College, self education is also important.

I'm jumping into every photo-J course that my school offers (both of them) while I can ... might head off to photo-J school once I'm done my BA...

As far as other "life experience" goes, I also work as the Technical Director (read: High Voltage, Audio, Lighting, load-bearing safety and fire-safety guy) of a local theatre. Have been in show biz. for nearly 10 years now I have no intentions of quitting, though I do hope to give it a back seat to photography once I'm done school. I've actually found that a LOT of my theatre and technical skills are directly transferable to photography, particularly my work with optical systems and load-bearing structures...

I'm glad Colin asked this question, I've been wondering the same thing for years now.

i took one photo class in the art dept, hoping for some expert guidance after years of self-teaching, and the guy never even looked at our negatives. we had a pretty nice dark room and cheap lab fee, but sadly there was little education involved. its where i learned to seperate photographers with vision from those who just talked a good game. so 'yea!' for other interests

->> BS in Electrical Engineering from Thuggery U...I mean the University of Cincinnati. Right after college I went to work for the Washington Post, and pretty much have been in, out and around the IT and Photo world the last few years.

Any education is good. I think a lot of college has to do with learning about life, and being dedicated to the pursuit of one goal. The main thing I think a college degree says about anyone is that they are able to finish a long term project.

In today's business world, a degree is a must have. If you ever come up against anybody with the same qualifications, but the other guy has a degree...the other guy is more likely to get the job. Unfair? Perhaps, but definitely true.
