->> just to let everyone know,
after a large percentage of us moaning to canon during the 1st week of the EURO 2004 football championships, they have had the 'boys' working on an update and they are rolling it out on all our camera's today.
the firmware is 1.0.2. and I will be giving it some serious abuse tonight at the italy v bulgaria game, and will report back.....

I still think it is a great camera and use both of them everyday....I do not want to start a Nikon vs Canon thing

->> muzzy camera's
most of it is down to the settings in the Custom Functions. most problems can be solved by setting CF 17,20 and 21 all to 0. But some of the camera's still aren't razor sharp, so they have written a new firmware.

->> Firmware can make a world of difference in a digital camera. They're basically a computer with an optical sensor and several motors attached, all under the control of the firmware.

There are mechanical adjustments that could affect focus also, but the design should have minimized those. Repeatability is the name of the game these days, and the fewer necessary adjustments in the assembly line (from sub-assembly to final assembly), the happier Canon and Nikon are, along with their investors and end-users.

->> poured down of rain last night at the match, a real monsoon. so it was hard to give the camera a fair chance because of all the water getting on the kit, even through the aquatech covers !!!

1st impressions are that the cameras that weren't razor sharp look better, but again too much water around to be certain. hopefully dry tonight for the holland v latvia game, so a more consise effort to come.............

->> ok, just spoken to canon here at the championships, and the firmware update is a big one. it normally takes 30sec - 1 min to do a firmware update, and this one takes 7-8mins.
It addresses the sharpness issues along with colour issues aswell. he could be very specific because it's quite complicated, but it is a major improvement....

A handout also stated that this firmware update has nothing to do with the sharpness issues reported to Canon. Further infoamrtion on that topic will be made available at a later date.

I've had a couple of games to shoot with the new firmware now and it's very apparent that the shaprness and tone levels can be 'reset' back to 0 to get the desired image.

->> Firmware update for the EOS-1D Mark II coming at end of month

Thursday, June 24, 2004 | by Rob Galbraith

Canon USA's Chuck Westfall indicates that a firmware update is being readied for the EOS-1D Mark II.

While Canon is not releasing details at this time about what is changed in the upcoming firmware release, the issues it addresses are described as minor and unlikely to impact the use of the camera by most users, including news and sports photographers.

Contrary to information circulating on the Web, says Westfall, the new firmware will not change the in-camera sharpening algorithm or alter the autofocus performance of the camera.

Slated for release towards the end of June 2004, the new firmware will be a user-installable free download from a Canon web site.
