| Ray Whitehouse's Message: |
Ray Whitehouse is a Chicago-based visual journalist attending Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism.
In 2011, he won first place in the ISBOP Sports Photo Competition and third place in the Illinois College Press Association Sports Photo Contest. He was a summer photo intern at the Greensboro News and Record and is currently a visuals intern at The Oregonian.
In 2011, he won a NPPA Region 5 Monthly Spot News Contest.
In 2010, he was awarded third place in the Associated Collegiate Press Photo Excellence Award and won a NPPA Region 5 Monthly Sports Clip Contest. He completed a summer internship at The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Indiana.
In 2009, he was twice nominated for Hearst Photojournalism Awards and won the Illinois College Press Association Honorable Mention award for General News Photography.
He started working for the school paper, The Daily Northwestern, in the Fall of 2008, completing his first photo assignment before his first homework assignment. From June to December 2009, he served as the Photo Editor for The Daily Northwestern. He’s also worked as an assistant photo editor, assistant sports editor and photo columnist.
He’s freelanced for many clients, including Chicago Magazine, Chicago Public Schools, The State of Illinois and Northwestern Magazine.
His love for photography started in 2007 while shooting high school basketball in Chicago. After capturing the sheer athleticism of players like Derrick Rose and Iman Shumpert (left), he was hooked.
In addition to photography, Ray plays club baseball and is a manager for the Northwestern Women’s Basketball Team. His favorite photographers include Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vincent Laforet, Scott Strazzante, Chase Jarvis, Tim Montoani, Patrick Smith and David Hobby.
