Jay Janner's Message: One minute I’m in the middle of a small mosh pit in a grungy, beer-soaked club photographing Masked Intruder, a band of four guys from Madison, WI, who wear colorful ski masks and play matching instruments.

Moments later I’m rubbing elbows with rap royalty Diddy in a backstage VIP section of the Fader Fort. Armed sheriff deputies provide security for the big shots backstage, as thousands of fans inside the packed venue cheer for more.

Quickly I rush to the other side of downtown to a 1,000-person capacity club where Prince will soon take the stage. It’s the hottest ticket at SXSW, and because only one photographer was allowed in the club, I find myself on the outside looking in, literally. I stand across the street with my longest telephoto lens, and get a few photos of the R&B legend when he appears through a small window. On the sidewalk it was just me with my giant lens and few dedicated Prince fans who couldn’t get into the show listening to muted sounds of ‘Purple Rain’ coming through the club’s walls.

After four days and nights photographing some of the 2,000 bands that came from around the world, that was how the 2013 edition of SXSW ended for me. These are some of my favorite photos from the festival. — Jay Janner
