Last month I made a trip into Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico with fellow photographer Dominic Bracco II and a fixer to cover the funeral of Sergio Adrían Hernández Güereca or "Keko" as he was called. Güereca, 15, was shot and killed June 7 on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, near the Paso del Norte Bridge in downtown El Paso by a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was trying to make an arrest during a rock-throwing incident. The agent was on the U.S. side of the bridge.
I live in El Paso and I have been going over to J-Town all my life. Not so much these past two years. This was my first time covering a funeral and only my third time going over to cover a story. I have been hesitant, for obvious reasons. It is one thing to come in from another city, shoot and then go back to your family far away and another thing to go in, shoot and go back to your family 15 minutes away. Don't want to make your neighbors mad. All three trips have been enlightening. Hope to continue covering our sister city in the future.
Here is a link to an audio slide show that I made.

The corrido was written by Gilbert Aguirre, (no relation) a guitar player who plays daily for passersby as they walk over the international bridge. He witnessed the shooting.
Thanks for the scope!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hello, Thanks for the view. I am a student at the University of Texas at El Paso. I am currently in San Antonio interning in the photo department for the San Antonio Express-News. In the summer of '08 I completed a successful internship in the photo department at Sports Illustrated in NYC. Amazing experience, and city! I have also interned as a multimedia intern at Washingtonpost.com, and as a photo intern at Scripps Howard News Service and San Angelo Standard-Times. I love to shoot and like showing people that El Paso has shooters too! I was recently recognized for the first time by CPOY and I am stoked! It is guaranteed that every year the list of CPOY winners is going to have 90 percent of students from Ohio U, Brooks, Western Kentucky, Missouri and I am happy to see UTEP finally on that list!
