Garrett Cortese's Message: This past fall I was lucky enough to go on a trip to the San Juan Mountains outside of Silverton, Colorado. Put together by Red Bull, the trip featured pro wakeskaters Brian Grubb and Dieter Humpsch. By utilizing a winch (think lawnmower engine with spool of rope attached) Brian and Dieter were able to ride across bodies of water throughout the region. In a sort of homage to the miners of the area's past, we started at the Animas River in Silverton and made our way up into the mountains - back to the source. While miners were following the water for precious minerals, we were following the water for more water. Ultimately we made our way to an unbelievable lake close to 12,500 feet high. Three mines used to operate there and nearly everything was left behind when they shut down all those years ago. It was both eerie and awesome to walk amongst the debris and then photograph the guys wakeskating on the lake - and at times using some of the old mine scraps as obstacles to slide across.

The trip was a lot of work but also unbelievably fun. We featured the whole thing in a special story in the Photo Annual issue of Alliance Wake that came out in November. A more extensive gallery of images can be seen on the Alliance website here:

Thanks for stopping by,

-Garrett

I am currently the Editor and Director of Photography for Alliance Wake Magazine in Orlando, Florida. Alliance is an internationally distributed magazine covering the lifestyle and movement of wakeboarding and wakeskating and the cultures that make them so much fun. To put it simply, I've spent the better part of the last decade on boats documenting the growth and progression of these sports, and I've enjoyed every minute of it.

Some of my recent freelance clients include Red Bull, Monster, Liquid Force, Electric, Vans, Fox, O'Neill, Body Glove, Reef, Spy, Oakley, Jet Pilot, Kicker audio, Slingshot, CWB, Axis, MasterCraft, Ronix, and many others.

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions about my work or my availability for freelance assignments.
