This is my senior project for my photo class at RIT on hard to place foster children.
Most families are excited to bring a new member into their household, but other times a mother, or family, is unable to provide for and keep that child. For many different reasons children are given up, abandoned, abused, or neglected and put into “the system’. According to the most current Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System Report (AFCARS), released in January 2008, approximately 510,000 children in the U.S.A. are in foster care as of September 2006. Of those children, six percent, or 30, 949 kids, are 14 years old. Cody is one of these kids.
Cody is a very energetic 14 year old who enjoys many of the things that other 14 year olds do; such as playing video games, going outside, playing and watching sports and listening to music. But unlike most 14 year olds, Cody is in a dorm with either other dormers. This isn’t like summer camp this is his home. Unlike most kids, he doesn’t have a family. He doesn’t have a place where he can really call home. Home to him is a residential treatment facility where he eats, drinks, sleeps and goes to school. He has very little privacy, bedroom doors much be open at all times and t only the dormers assigned to that room is allowed in it. Most of the dormers here are dealing with multiple issues such as family instability, emotional trauma, mental health, and complex psychiatric and behavioral issues. Cody is only one of the numerous children in foster care who are “hard to place”.
