On June 24 tragedy struck the town of Parkersburg, Iowa again as Aplinton-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas was shot in the weight room. Thomas later died at Covenant Medical Center after being airlifted there. Thomas, 58, was supervising a group of around 20 students around 7:45 a.m., when Mark D. Becker, 24, of rural Parkersburg, came in and shot Thomas several times, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Ed Thomas coached at AP for 34 years with 283 wins. He was a leader of the community and won state championships in 1993 and 2001. In 2005 the NFL named him High School Coach of the Year.
Thomas coached players Jared DeVries, Casey Wiegmann, Aaron Kampman and Brad Meester, now playing in the NFL.
