| Ken Steinhardt's Message: |
I have been working as a professional photographer for more than 30 years. I'm a graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography, where I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1983. When I graduated, the PJ program very small and my interest in photojournalism was sparked by Pulitzer Prize winning Photographer Jerry Gay, who was passing through Santa Barbara and landed a teaching position at Brooks. I was lucky enough to be there when he was because Gay didn't stay long.
Now I'm a 19-year staff photographer for The Orange County Register. Though not all those years have been as a staff shooter. I have worn many hats at the paper, community photographer, city editor, freelance shooter, color imaging tech and finally after twenty years of unsuccessful formal applications for open staff positions, a promotion came out of the blue, to a staff position. All I can say is persistence pays off. I now cover breaking news on a daily basis, its my dream gig. 100% of my work goes straight to the web and 10% of that sees ink in print editions.
I must admit, I'm a geek. I love a challenge, give me a problem and I can solve it, usually with the help of others. The best part is passing that knowledge on to other shooters.
