Bryon Houlgrave's Message: Winter in North Iowa.

On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, a call came across the scanner that there was a multiple vehicle traffic accident on Interstate 35. We were in the midst of a pretty gnarly winter storm, with wind gusts exceeding 40 mph. The storm caused whiteout conditions, and travel was not advised.

The accident was a good 30 miles away from the office, in a rural area, and we heard that up to 40 vehicles were part of the accident. Emergency personnel were taking an alternate route to the scene because the interstate was going to shut down. We decided to follow the alternate route.

Just as we left town, the world disappeared. We got a mile outside of town and were stopped by traffic from the oncoming lane. They were honking and flashing their lights. A man was running along the road, screaming to stop. We did. As the wind broke for a brief moment, we saw the carnage ahead of us.

I estimated between 30-40 vehicles involved in this pile up, but only about a dozen cars were actually wrecked. Minor injuries were reported.

It was a scene unlike that of Interstate 35, which I photographed the next day, but if it weren't for the quick thinking of a few individuals at the scene it could have been a lot worse.

Thanks for dropping by.
