Over the last several months the CNC North photo department has been working on a project about the building of the pinky schooner Ardelle by shipbuilder Harold Burnham of Essex and his dedicated group of volunteers.
Harold comes from a long lineage of shipwrights and continues the family tradition of building wooden boats. The town of Essex is as well famous as one of the meccas of New England schooner building. Schooners are traditional fishing vessels and the Ardelle is called a pinky schooner because the stern is pinched together or "pinked". Most of these smaller fishing boats stayed closer to shore and as well hauled supplies up and down the coast. The vessel is named after Harold's grandmother Ardelle and his daughter Perry Ardelle.
Upon completion this summer, the Ardelle will be used for charters and as well as an educational resource at the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center.
Our project includes photo galleries, videos and audio slideshows. Laurie Fullerton has as well written a very nice piece about Harold, the volunteers and the building of the Ardelle. To see more of our work, which is updated regularly, please visit:
