Image © 2007, Jesse Soll || The carcass of a 72’, 140,000-pound blue whale lies along the coast of Hobson County Park in Ventura, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2007. The whale, which was spotted floating in the water four days earlier, washed ashore on Friday after dying from injuries from a collision with a boat. Scientists took samples and rescued the skull of the animal, which weighs 5,000 pounds and measures 15’ long by 9’ wide. The other remains were buried a mile down the coast at Faria County Park.

Jesse Soll's Message: Just updated with some shots of the enormous blue whale that washed ashore in Ventura last weekend. I've seen blue's in the water, but seeing one on land was really amazing. It was worth the $90 parking ticket (thank you Ventura Sheriff's department for taking advantage of hundreds of people who simply wanted to see this amazing creature) and the smell, which alternated from kind of tolerable to testing my gag reflexes. You really have no idea how magnificantly huge these creatures are until you stand 5 feet from one.

I hope you enjoy. Thanks!
