Inspired by the recent collections of photographers' favorite photos from the last decade, I decided to put together my own collection. It was harder than it seemed, so I limited it to sports photos.
Some great assignments, some great experiences...spending a few days with my childhood football idol Dick Butkus, and a few days with Coach George O'Leary after he resigned from Notre Dame, talking racing with Richard Petty, David Pearson, and Junior Johnson, and drinking beer and chewing tobacco with Cale Yarborough, having another of my childhood football heroes, Wahoo McDaniel, stick up for me in a parking lot altercation that involved an axe handle and a gun (not mine), having Coach Steve Spurrier tag me "Georgia Boy", telling Hank Aaron he's still the king, throwing a baseball with Oscar Gamble, being shown how to throw a spitball by Gaylord Perry, and, outside the sports world, playing guitar and eating barbecue ribs with bluesman Honeyboy Edwards, and having him describe to me the night Robert Johnson died...
