This past summer i was looking for something different to do. I knew i wanted to learn spanish so i thought i would try to get to South America. I have a friend who moved here from Peru a couple of years ago, and with a little help from him i took off. First i went to Costa Rica for a month study abroad to try and learn a little of the language. (i knew absolutely none when i went.) From Costa Rica i flew to Peru and lived in the town of Cajamarca in the Northern Andes Mountains. I lived in a house with other volunteers from around the world that were my age and ll volunteering or working for different NGO's in the city. It seems like everyone i met was somehow connected to an NGO. This helped me out by allowing me to meet people i otherwise might not have. The city was unique a beautiful. It is rich in history (the fall of the Incan empire happened here) yet receives very few tourists because it is located so far from Cusco and Machu Picchu. It was a phenomenal experience and i cant wait to get back down to south america. Hopefully to work on some more in depth projects. It was very hard to gain the access i wanted with very very little knowledge of the language and in such a short time. But, still it was like no place else on the earth. It solidified the fact that i want to pursue work with spanish based NGO's either here or in South/ Central America.
