Political discussion, dissension and division seem to be the topics of the day and I have had several assignment recently covering politicians and the passions they are enciting. This goes all the way from senators and congressmen holding forums on health reform to the local city council being in disarray and the citizens beginning to petition for a change in government. There have even been assignments related to the impact of politics such as the guy with the smoking truck in the Cash for Clunkers program. Its tough on a mechanic to put a mechanically sound vehicle to death.
I don't really see any horizon where there will be political harmony so I suppose we should get used to covering division. I know some of you guys do this all the time but I can't remember a time when national politics had such a dramatic impact on my corner of the world. The local guys are always doing stuff that gets the people all worked up so that is just the newest set of actors on the local stage. What is different is how much local people are involved now in the national political scene. And we have not even had a tea party to cover. Just waiting for one of those.
