Image © Max Waugh 2012 || A friend, who happens to be a very good bird photographer, invited me to join him on a Peru photo tour with a specific goal in mind: the marvelous spatuletail hummingbird. The marvelous spatuletail is considered the world's most spectacular hummingbird species, and it's also one of the rarest. It was made famous in recent years when the BBC filmed its dynamic courtship rituals in the only place the species is found: a small area in northern Peru. As it turned out, my friend could not go on the trip, so I was left to fend for myself. Though I was concerned whether I'd survive a week of nothing but hummingbird photography, the trip was well worth it. We spent a portion of three days stationed in the spatuletail lek, where the males dance and show off for the females (the same place the BBC got their footage). I came away with a lot of good images of this amazing bird, possibly one of the most comprehensive photo collections of the males in action. The only thing I missed? Nailing a shot of the male dancing in mid-air... something I almost got. Nonetheless, it was a privilege to have such a chance to photograph this highly endangered species. It ended up being the highlight of the trip and I'm calling it my "photo moment of the year."

Max Waugh's Message: I've only just returned from a three week trip, so I'm a bit late getting to my "Best of 2012" stuff. It was great getting back to shooting more sports this past year, but 2012 was still dominated by nature and travel moments. Here are a few memorable ones.

I am now available for freelance sports photography assignments in the Seattle area. In the past decade or so I have primarily covered college athletics, both for editorial publications and Division I universities. Sports covered include: football, basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, gymnastics, soccer, tennis, golf and rowing.
