So I heard I was shoot the 10 year old State Championship game on Saturday and not shooting the Saints on Sunday because I had to cover other assignments as I was leaving the office on Friday.
I will admit that initially I did not look forward to it as much as NCAA, NFL games but I took the same gear as I would have taken to a pro game and figured I would make the best out of it still not happy I was not shooting Nola.
Once I started shooting I realized that this game meant everything to these kids and really enjoyed shooting. After talking to a parent I realized theses kids had never had a pro photographer at their games much less someone with a 400 2.8 and that every image that made the web or print was something that they would treasure.
My favorite moment of the game was when one of the kids came and sat beside me while I was shooting near their bench.The game did not move very fast so I would shoot a play and then show him the images of his teammates and tell him about newspaper photography. It is not much but I remember being their age.
In the grand scheme of things I realized that I do not have to be shooting pro every weekend to have fun and make good images.
I think I had more fun showing him my photos than anything else which is something that would have never happened at a pro game with all the hustle and bustle of deadlines and live updates
