Nic Hume's Message: For the past several weeks I have been doing documentary work in and around the Chernobyl region of Ukraine.

The Chernobyl disaster has been a long-standing interest of mine. After being laid-off from the newspaper I was working at I decided to do what I've been talking about for years, and come to Ukraine to see this story through my own eyes. I already know I'll be coming back.

The stories in and around Chernobyl region are, without fail, awe-inspiring. From old women who saw a second sunset in the east on the night following the accident (Actually the raging fire that was still burning at the plant) to the salvage scrappers who live inside the highly-contaminated Exclusion Zone and tell me that even when I think I'm alone in Pripyat, they are watching, the stories here are without equal.

To describe the destruction is impossible.

This place is death.

Even though the devastation here is as absolute, nature is fast reclaiming the contaminated area, and new life can be found everywhere. Hope, it seems, springs eternal.
