Image © 2002, Matt Stroshane || April 8, 2002: Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-110. This was my first accredited launch. What strikes me most about this picture now is that there is nobody at the press site. I count a dozen people. I'm sure for the final launch there will be thousands of people in that space.

Matt Stroshane's Message: Here is an update I have wanted to do for a long time:

As a freelance photographer, I covered the NASA / Kennedy Space Center beat for Getty Images from 2002 until 2010. I've wanted to do an update of my favorite images from the 24 missions I've covered but never seemed to get around to doing it. With the final launch less than a month away, I was running out of time.

During a particular mission, there are only a few chances to photograph the shuttle: roll over from the Orbiter Processing Facility to the Vehicle Assembly building; roll out to the launch pad; roll back of the rotating service structure the day before launch; launch; and landing. I tried to show a variety of those photos. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much I enjoyed making them.

I'd also like to say a special thank you to Orlando Sentinel photographer Red Huber. From the first day I stepped onto Kennedy Space Center, Red has always been there for me, mentoring me, encouraging me and pushing me in my photography. He's been a great role model and is always three steps ahead in working for new angles, techniques, and access.
