I was in the An Giang province in the small town of Tinh Bien less than 10 kilometers from the Cambodian border for the annual Dua Bo - Cow Racing - competition. I really had no idea what to expect from this sport. A one hour trip by motorbike from my hotel in Chau Doc and I arrived at the racing pit. About a 600 meter circular track filled with mud and water.
Khmer and Vietnamese fans crowd to the edges of the track. Police kept hitting the crowds with a long bamboo branch to keep them in line. Though it didn't do much good. The crowds would rush onto the track every time the cows would come around for a lap blocking the view of several thousand spectators, not to mention photographers.
Each driver sits atop an upside down T-like structure that is connected to the harness of two racing cows. The drivers control the cows through two reins and a cane with a metal spike on one end. Two drivers race against each other in every match. The first two laps determines placement going into the final lap. There is only one 200 meter stretch in which the drivers are allowed to race. The rest of the lap is controlling the cows around each corner while spectators scream and yell. The cows often get spooked and run off the track sending fans, officials and photographers leaping out of the way.
