The end of an era came in Tucson Saturday night as the De Anza Drive In movie theater played the final double feature. The 25-acre theater, where generations of Tucsonans hung out, went on dates and snuck in by way of a car trunk, was sold to a development group in Phoenix last year, but continued to operate until Saturday.
The theater opened in 1951 and when it closed, it was the oldest in operation in the state. It was one of eight drive ins in Tucson.
While the theater has closed and the land sold, it's unclear what will become of the site. It'll probably become a grocery store/mixed use strip mall. For the foreseeable future though, it'll sit unused.
