Fargo Floods
20,000 volunteers and over 3 million sandbags in Fargo, N.D. which is expecting the highest flood levels of the Red River since 1897. The tension and anxiety is almost palpable. yet the people of Fargo are working so hard to create temporary levees that nobody seems to have enough time to worry. I'm still here in Fargo.
In the continually perilous documentary video/stills juggle I managed to get a few frames.

A little video of a big protest here at the DNC. I took a couple of batons to the head and inhaled some pepper spray. Fun times at the DNC! Giardia, pepper spray, and batons all in the same month! Perks of the job!
_____
It is so hard for me to come back from a shoot with stills that I don't want to see published. This has been a continual struggle for me as I juggle video storytelling with photojournalism. I think I am finally getting a little bit better at managing the HD cam on one shoulder and the still body on the other.
I had the opportunity to work on a story about the 'perfect storm' of issues helping to create the hunger crisis in Ethiopia. I went there to do both stills with a big commitment to a video story. I traveled with a reporter out of our NY bureau to the capital Addis Ababa, then to Awasa, and finally to Konso and we put up a small photo gallery from each region.
The story is live on the USA TODAY website and we ran it lead on A1 on Monday.
The online package our great design team produced includes additional photo galleries and video interviews that go deeper into the problems, responses, and solutions to this serious hunger issue.
The video, supplemental video, photo galleries, and written story can be found here.
