Peter Lockley's Message: A couple of weeks ago I was asked to shoot the Washington Wizards media day. Basically, it is a free-for-all day, where every newspaper, magazine, and wire service gets the opportunity to set up a backdrop and make portraits of every player on the team. PR staff marches the players from set up to set up to make sure everyone has a turn. This is something we do every year, and every year it seems the players seem less and less interested. It also seems like it gets harder and harder to coax an expression out of a player due to their general lack of enthusiasm. Honestly, I can't say I blame them. They are rushed from one backdrop to another and asked to to the same five or six poses over and over again.

With that in mind, I wanted to try something different. Our sports department had asked me for a simple portrait of the Wizards "Big 3" of Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler, and Antawn Jamison. I obliged them by setting up a simple black backdrop, but on the side I set up a makeshift "Photo Booth". PVC pipe and a few curtains gave the players some privacy, and a tripod, flash, and pocket wizard allowed them to do the rest.

It was a change of pace for me and for the players and I was pretty happy with the results...

Thanks for looking!

-Peter
