| Image © James Nix || The North Carolina Research Campus rises in Kannapolis, five years after Pillowtex closed its doors, laying off 4,800 people in the state's largest permanent layoff. Dole Food Company owner David Murdock, who previously owned the mill in the 1980s, bought the property in a bankruptcy sale, demolished it and is constructing his vision, a billion-dollar biotechnology center. The North Carolina Research Campus is set to open later this year. |

| James Nix's Message: |
On July 30, 2003, Pillowtex (the former Cannon Mills) closed its doors laying off over 7,000 people nationwide and 4,800 in Kannapolis, NC. It was the largest permanent layoff off in North Carolina History. In the five years since the giant textile mill closed, Dole Food Company owner David Murdock (who once owned the mill himself) has repurchased the property and is building his vision, the North Carolina Research Campus, on the old mill site.
The research campus will bring new jobs and new blood to the region, but many of the former mill workers are still struggling to find work, many making half of what they once made in the mill.
This is one of two series I did for the five year anniversary of mill closing.
