Despair Comforted by Community Worker Bernice Hall at his home in Glen Innes, Auckland, Aung Win Thaung breaks down. He has spent his life on the run from the authorities as a result of fighting for democracy before fleeing his home country of Burma. A UN Refugee, he found his way to New Zealand where he was housed next to what local police hearsay claims is the most prolifically violent in the area. His house has been attacked and his car vandalised while he is at home, culminating in a large kitchen knife being stabbed through his door in 2005. Aung Win has received some help from local services and the police and security lights were fitted to his home late last year but sporadic abuse from neighbours continues. 26Jul05 © SNL 05 James Madelin.
