Update: Diffuser Face As you can see, the diffuser evens out the light A LOT. The only catch with the diffuser is that you have to extend the front of the lens all the way through the reflector beyond the front of the diffuser, or else you get major flare. Since the lens is now blocking the center of the reflector (the flash is now pointing straight up at the bottom of the lens), not as much light can make it to the top of the reflector, and you get some fall-off up there (as seen at the top of the ring). This can be solved with a setting that didn't matter without the diffuser, the flash head's zoom. The next photo illustrates this...
