U.B.M. Fire
Asst. East Chicago Fire Chief Edmundo Muro surveys damage to the second floor hall of the Union Benefica Mexicana building at 3451 Michigan Ave. in East Chicago, Ind., after it was destroyed by fire early Wednesday, February 1, 2006. The Union Benefica Mexicana, or "U.B.M.", is a historic organization in the Northwest Indiana Mexican community, organizing annual parades and pageants for several years. Additionally, the hall at the U.B.M. building was a popular gathering place in East Chicago for dances, wedding receptions, and other events.
