Puerto Rico's final game in the Series was against the South region champions from Debary, FL. Debary was one of those cases where "they were winners for just being there" rang true. Debary is about 30 miles north of Orlando and the team was scheduled to fly to Michigan on August 14th. On August 13th, Hurricane Charles hit the area. Many of the Debary parents that drove to attend the series left home in advance of Charlie and had no clear idea of what they'd find when they returned home. The team was grounded on the 14th, missed the opening ceremonies, missed their pre-series field practice, and didn't finally arrive in Kalamazoo until after 1 AM on Monday... the day series play started.
By the time PR played Debary on Friday, both teams were mathematically eliminated from the championship game. PR's fate was sealed when they lost to the eventual champions 1-4 on Thursday and went to 4-3 in the series. The result was that PR vs. South was a pure "no pressure" game and was played mainly for fun. The girls still played hard, but laughed more, and cheered for one another. At the end of the game, this scene erupted. Both teams locked arms, sang, and circle danced together. As you can see, some players were in tears. It was the end of the road for them in the Series.
