Comments | [09/09/08] When I upgraded my 20D to the 1D-MkII, I thought I was going to keep the 20D as a second body. But instead, I traded it for a 1D so that I wouldn't have to carry around two sets of batteries/chargers. Well, the 1D blows the 20D away. Better AF & faster frame rate, and if you shoot RAW and expose properly it does a great job at 800 ISO which is were I shoot most of the time. Noise is not anywhere near the issue I though it would be from listening to what others have said. And, for some reason, the original 1D has the ability to make any lens look really sharp. They are so cheap now that it's a great value.

Comments | [06/10/08] Picked up one of these a few months ago as an upgrade from my 20D. Worlds above it as far as autofocus tracking speed and accuracy. Much more solid construction as well. Image quality is very good at and below ISO 640, with 800 and 1600 being usable. Auto white balance is not as good as 20D or newer 1D Mark II but it works well enough (and can be corrected in Photoshop easily). Being an older camera, it does not support CF cards larger than 1GB.

Comments | [04/02/06] I carry my 1D everywhere as a backup (even now on '06). It's practically bulletproof and has given me some of the best pictures of my career. Use Genuine Fractals for upsizing and your print sizes are nearly limitless. A real bargain now too, at around $1400 for one in good condition.

Comments | [03/20/06] Love this camera, I was using it for an assignment the other day and was impressed by how fast the zoom and the quality of the pictures where. I also like that the flash X-synch at 1/500th sec and all the new canons don’t. It was also the first time using the Canon 1D and a Nikon D2h and the clear winner for me was the Canon 1D just the quality and the easy way if usage of the Canon camera with makes me take Canon over Nikon any day. Also the 8 fps makes it nice to not miss a shoot in front of you.

Comments | [01/15/05] Fast Fast Fast focus! Pro areans 1/500th at 800 ISO with a 2.8 lens. Low light high school stuff still very fast focus, but a little grainy. A little noise reduction and it's awesome. Only problem for me is battery life. I love both of mine, and probably will keep them forever.

Comments | [04/15/04] Bought this refurbished from Louis Feldman at Samy's (great guy). WOW! fast AF, solid feel, ISO tweakable in 1/3 stops (which I love), 8fps, good image quality, the only thing I would complain about is that I didn't get it sooner. Oh, and no shutter delay or anything, menu is a little confusing at first but that is negligible.

Comments | [02/28/04] Very few complaints about the 1D. The only thing I could complain about is the color could be a little better, with less tweaking in PhotoShop. If there was a 9.5 rating, I would give it 9.5.

Comments | [02/26/04] This camera rocks! Coming from Nikon I feel canon is a superior product. I picked up my friends D2h and I really know how well the canon is set up! I'm happy to make the switch long overdue!

Comments | [02/14/04] I love this camera, the build quality, the AF performance, the lack of shutter lag, the frame rate....it really nails stuff for the sports photographer. My only complaint is that it adds a greenish cast to JPEGs. If it weren't for the greenish cast, I'd give it a 10.

Comments | [12/04/03] The EOS 1D, is a digital masterpiece... using the Nikon D1x, that my boss owns sucks, it just doesn't compare to my 1D. Canon likes to keep it in the family. My EOS 3, and EOS 1v, and old school EOS 1 all have the same controlls, look, and feel the same as the 1D. I will be burried with it.

Comments | [11/19/03] AWESOME! I went from a D30 to 1D shooting primarily prep sports. I honestly don't know how I did it with the D30 the AF and 8FPS are epic! I still have some problems with it losing focus when I fire a burst, but conditions are lousy when I am shooting, so I can live with it, the sensor is MUCH better then the d30 particularly at high ISO. I can't wait until I can afford a second one...I haven't had any problems with the battery, I have the one it shipped with and I regularly shoot 2-300 shots and it has not once crapped out on me.

Comments | [10/20/03] Finally got it. Love it. Can't really remember sports photography before it. Now that the price has dropped - there's no excuse. Get one. Unless you're still waiting for an updated model in which case you will miss about 3000 excellent photographs you could have sold for $20 a pop. Get one. And while your at it, get the capture one dslr software from phase one. The quality of my photos and the ease of getting "the shot" have gone up significantly since I started using this camera. My only gripes (and they are VERY minor) are noise at 1600 ISO, so-so battery, all this two handed controls, and well... that's about it. Awesome camera. -Pablo

Comments | [10/12/03] I got mine two days ago and already I am tons happier about having one than using my film camera. I got to see it in action at the Panthers @ Colts game. Learned a lot about its capabilities. It is the best camera I have ever owned and am thinking of buying another.

Comments | [09/17/03] I have been using this camera for about 4 months now. It is the reason I switched from Nikon. It's specs still are equivalent of and some even better than the D2 (synch speed for one) This is still the photojournalist's camera.

Comments | [08/26/03] I have been using a D1H for the past 2 years and have just started using the Canon 1D. The camera is so well thought out. Its everying and more that I had hoped for and it feels and handles like a dream -- also the 16-35 f2.8 is such an improvement over previous models and focuses so close its scary!

Comments | [06/28/03] Yeah - With all you 10's out there, I'm going to agree w/ those just a little disappointd w/ the focus - just the same...sometimes when the camera tells you it's in...it aint.... when you check your review...but on the overall assesment, its still a great piece of gear...and compared to the 10D(for a back-up), there isn't any comparison, believe me !

Comments | [06/22/03] Great camera, and durable too! I dropped mine in a parking lot, and it fell from my shoulder straight to the asphalt, and it hit hard... It still worked perfectly when I picked it up. The only damage I could find was a couple of minor scratches.

Comments | [06/01/03] I just wanted to give this camera a rating --- I agree with everyone that has positive comments --- fast AF, fast fps, 1V metering. I have noticed however, that the chip on this camera collects more dust on it than any of my other Canon cameras combined (D30, D60 and 10D). These other 3 I never had to clean the sensor chip! Another minor problem is the flash shoe seems to develop play in it that will cause the flash to not work properly. Never again, had this problem on my other 3 cameras. Love the great control over the WB and custom color matrix settings. Gives me more options than I had with film.

Comments | [04/14/03] Not much to say that hasn't already been said. But having come over from Nikon, this camera is a god sent. Its fast, durable and the AF is light years ahead of its competiton. Before I would lose a great image because the AF would throw the shot out of focus while busting off frames. That hasn't been the case with the 1D. Im glad I switched.

Comments | [03/17/03] This is the best! Worth every penny, excuse me dollar. 8 fps, AF, NO SHUTTER DELAY and image quality are tops. I also own a Canon D60 and the only thing I wouls like in the Canon 1D is the image review zoom feature of the D60.

Comments | [02/13/03] Great Camera I have switched from the Nikon D1 to this camera and I am glad I did, color is amazing, 8fps is unheard of to this point, and believe it or not I am getting about 500-900 shots per battery, Maybe my batteries are special. I have had a little of focus trouble were the image was a little soft and behind the subject was sharp, overall a great Camera. It paid dor itself in less than a month.

Comments | [09/20/02] I am particularly impressed with the ISO 3200 performance of the camera, in adition to all of the other benefits mentioned below. As someone who shoots a lot of high school sports in less than ideal lighting, I can truly say it has been a great surprise. Sure there's noise, but isn't there grain when pushing film to 3200? I can't say I regret anything about purchasing the 1D, even with the new model coming soon. Having recently shot a youth baseball World Series with it and logged over 15,000 images in a week, I can honestly say it performed flawlessly! Two thumbs up!

Comments | [06/24/02] The difference between the 1D and the D30 is remarkable. The D30 is a very good camera but the 1D is a great camera. Professional performance for great action shots. No hunting for focus, even when teams are wearing solid colors. Fast AF even in low light and the 8 frames per second is incredible. Sharp images, first time I have used a digital camera and not needed Unsharp Mask in Photoshop. In a word: Awesome!

Comments | [06/21/02] An absolute pleasure to use. I'm back to the days of getting the moment I used to get when I was shooting with film cameras. No shutter delay and beautiful images. Battery life is a bummer though, 250 frames on a good day.

Comments | [06/21/02] I have been working in the digital part of photography for over 5 years and this is the first camera that truely looks and feals like a camera. Its file sizes are wonderful and the colors are very good. Its not film but sure close. Just remember you don't have to scan any more images and clean them up afterwards.

Comments | [06/21/02] The real deal! While most rave about the 8 fps, file size, high ASA perofrmance and the killer auto-focus (I have NOT had any trouble with the AF like some of complained about) ... to me THE best thing about the 1D is: NO SHUTTER DELAY! There are a couple of concerns ... clunky Canon software (use Dennis Walker's PhotoMechanic instead) and inconsistent battery performance ... overall this camera is the first that allows me to shoot like I did when I shot film. Another great thing ... my cameras are a little "hot" ... the expsoure is 1/3 - 1/2 stop better than what the ASA might indicate. For instance at Staples Center most D1 shooters are using 1/500 @ f/2/8 - ASA800 for their base expsoure. I use 1/500 @ f/2.8 at ASA640 and the files are beautiful!
