Nikon - D300 Digital SLR Camera Body
Quick Overview |
Engineered with pro-level features and performance, the 12.3 effective megapixel Nikon D300 digital camera combines brand new technologies with advanced features inherited from Nikon’s newly announced D3 professional digital SLR camera to offer serious photographers remarkable performance combined with agility.

The D300 features Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED Image Processing System that is central to driving the speed and processing power needed for many of the camera’s new features. The D300 features a new 51-point auto focus system with Nikon’s 3D Focus Tracking feature and two new LiveView shooting modes that allow users to frame a photograph using the camera’s high-resolution LCD monitor. The Nikon D300 shares a similar Scene Recognition System as found in the D3 that promises to greatly enhance the accuracy of auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance by recognizing the subject or scene being photographed and applying this information to the calculations for the three functions.

The D300 reacts with lightning speed, powering-up in a mere 0.13 seconds and shooting with an imperceptible 45 millisecond shutter release lag time. The D300 is capable of shooting at a rapid six frames per second and can go as fast as eight frames per second when using the optional MB-D10 Multi-Power Battery Pack. In continuous bursts, the D300 can shoot up to 100 shots* at full 12.3 megapixel resolution.

Comments | [09/03/08] I currently have put over 40,000 frames through this camera and its still running like new. Its got a few bumps and scratches, but this camera ROCKS! If you are thinking about getting one over an older body, just do it! You will be so happy you did!

Comments | [07/04/08] Had this camera with the battery grip and have been impressed with the speed and performance.... I'm not totally happy with 1600 + ISO it seems more grainy then the Canon 40D at 1600 ISO .... I've also noticed that both camera's looking at the same object have different reading... for example the Canon is 2.8 ISO 1600 speed 500.... the Nikon is 2.8 ISO 1600 Speed 320.... not sure why that is, but it's a minor issue for me.

Comments | [06/12/08] have the D300 + grip for about 3 months now, zero problems others have noted. I am impressed with the D300 and grip combo along with my lens collection things are going smooth.

Comments | [05/22/08] A great camera overall. Not quite as clean as the D3 at high ISO, but still way better than the D2X. ISO 200 has a bit of shadow noise but colour is still very good. Definitely a great second body. The grip works well too.

Comments | [05/17/08] I haven't experienced what Robert and Derrick have. Maybe I am lucky. Anyway, I've been using this camera for a month now, and now I know why this is an upgrade from the D2X. I had been pretty happy with the D2X, but one thing I really like about the D300 is its bigger buffer size. As mentioned many times already, the D300 seem to be able to handle high ISO situations better (I have to do some testing with my D2X to confirm). Lately I often shoot around ISO 1000 ~ 1250, and images are excellent. The grip feels and looks good. I also have a Canon 30D + grip, and the combo looks ugly. Speaking of grip, I am not happy about the fact that I have to buy a chamber cover separately (in order to use my D2X battery). And the cover is not only expensive ($30+), but also very hard to get now. Also, the battery that came with the body has a very short life. Not good. Now I can use my D2X's ones so this isn't an issue anymore. Overall, I love this camera. And this is the reason why I am thinking about being a pure Nikonian from bi-shooter. O

Comments | [03/24/08] I have to echo Derrick on the camera. I love the body and shoot with it constantly, but when I have the battery grip attached it shuts down at the most inopportune moments. The camera gets a 10, but to have to buy the grip to up it to 8 fps and find out the grip has an overly sensitive trigger and shuts the camera down every once in awhile is a disappointment. The battery grip gets a 6.

Comments | [03/05/08] My D300 with MB-D10 is 4 months old now and I can hardly find any weakness in this system, apart from LiveView feature being practically unuseful without a tilting screen. The battery works well (always over 1000 shots with one charge), surely better than D200. AF is now effective (at last!) although not perfect. The body looks solid and the new grip fits it like a glove (forget the loosy MB-D200) but is pricey. Performances at high ISO are amazing and compared with my D2x are simply stunning. Shooting indoor sports is now possible for me. All considered, a truly PRO camera and great value for the money.

Comments | [02/27/08] I've had my camera for about 4 weeks now, and I really enjoy it's capabilities. Image quality, ISO range, AF system, LCD, ease of use are all a step up from my D200. I tossed and turned about getting this camera, or getting a D2Xs. The onboard flash to fire remote SB's, but more specifically I thought with the MB-D10 grip it would surpass the D2Xs. So, for the camera alone, I'll give it a 9 - it loses points as of the 7 En-El3e batteries I have, only 2 work reliably in the camera. I'm also not so keen on a camera that can shoot at 8fps with grip, and only have a 12 shot buffer on JPG fine. Now to the MB-D10 grip - it is very expensive, but for battery life and the 8fps it was a necessity. The rear 4-way dial is small and tricky to use (unlike the bodies 4 way dial, which is pretty good), the shutter button is far too sensitive, you think you're half pressing the shutter, but you end up activating the shutter. The fact Nikon decided not to ship the grip with a BL-3 adapter for En-El4 batteries was a huge mistake - and the BL-3 is unavailable in Australia, months after the camera hit the market. I can't believe Nikon would prefer people who bought the grip would buy AA rechargeables, instead of the pricey genuine Nikon En-El4 and charger. I'm also having major problems with the camera shutting down unexpectedly, which is terrible for shooting on the fly. So for me, the grip has proven to be a bit of a lemon. NPS are looking for a solution for the battery shutting the camera down, but in the meantime I can't rely on the camera. Overall, the camera with grip, I'd give a 7.5, but there's no halves in the rating, so a 7 it is - and all down to the grip, if the grip had the above flaws fixed, the camera would score a 9.5 for what it is. I wish it was a 9.5 - perhaps my opinion will change in weeks to come, but relying 100% on my camera to pay the bills and live, at this point I'm not as thrilled as the reviewers I've read are with the camera.

Comments | [02/13/08] Huge improvement over D200 and replaces the D2hs in my bag. Finally a Nikon crop sensor body that can reasonably compete with the other "white" brand. New AF system rocks. Ability to use the EN-EL4 battery with the (excellent) grip for 8fps is a great feature. No negatives that I can see as of yet.

Comments | [01/30/08] Great files at 1250 ISO, very good at 1600, a huge screen, and a battery that has shown its moxy at zero degrees and below, it's just a way cool camera.
