Canon - EOS 1D Mark III Digital Camera Body
Quick Overview |
Canon's flagship EOS-1D Mark III is the most advanced EOS Digital SLR ever produced. It has a new 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System and a 3.0-inch LCD monitor with Canon's Live View technology. The 1D Mark III has a redesigned 100% viewfinder, a new 45-point AF system, and can shoot up to 10 fps continuously with a maximum burst of 110 shots. Dual DIGIC III Image Processors work in tandem to speed up every process while refining image quality; a new, lighter body has improved weather sealing and shutter durability. Every facet of the EOS experience has been enhanced with the 1D Mark III. It's the new standard.

Comments | [07/26/09] After all the firmware updates I'm finally happy with the body and the focusing is reliable.

Comments | [07/14/09] I have had mine for just under a year now without any problems. Having said that I do not use the auto track function and rely on the box in the middle. About 80% of pictures are in focus on this method and it keeps me sharp. I prefer it to the Mark 11 which is still a great camera body. The firmware updates are up to 1.14

Comments | [07/09/09] Great all around Camera from sports to wedding. I don't have problems with AF. ISO performance is great, Battery last forever, IQ is just fine for most of jobs. LCD is big but not good enough to check focus & detail.

Comments | [03/13/09] The first Mark III I had was solid, but my recent Mark III is excellent. Focus is much better and the files from a Mark III are just great. I still like the Mark III files over the D3 files when it comes to color. There is just something about them that stand out to me. I have not updated my camera to the latest firmware nor attempted to have it "fixed" by Canon for the recent issues. I have not experienced them yet with this camera so I am holding off for a while. I am rating it an 8 because I would have liked to have seen some more MP and a few other things.

Comments | [03/10/09] I'm sending my Mk-III back once again ) this recall opportunity) for soft images. It looked great when it return from the first recall but I'm still not happy with the amount of failures. Beautiful camera, no other issues but I'm sure this may have cost me clients. My 1Ds MkIII is perfect no complaints. UltraSonic clean saves so much time but after a while it needs a good manual cleaning.

Comments | [12/30/08] Had one since July 07 or so, never had a problem. Sent it in for the fix as a precaution, left my hands focusing fine, returned focusing fine. Low light performance is killer, AI Servo is just fine, color rendition is great. Best camera I have ever owned. I lucked out.

Comments | [12/11/08] Absolutely love the camera. I've never had a problem with mine, but that doesn't mean they're not out there. I use it for weddings and portraiture and it's great. Sharp images and amazing and those dark churches. I gave it an 8 because the problems have really killed resale value.

Comments | [12/09/08] I've had so many problems with my mkIIIs. On auto the exposure occasionally glitches (normally speed flicks to 8000th) which has cost me several times, and af still struggles (though better than my mkIIs ever did), losing focus even against decent detail. I'm annoyed you can't use two sensors together a la mkII and that they're moving toward the prosumer styles in the camera layout. I just hope the mkIV is a vast improvement. have had to get repairs done three times in 8 months, thru camera faults. Still a decent camera, great colour and improvement on prev models.

Comments | [12/01/08] Great camera when it works. I've had to return it for servicing twice this year for "err 99" messages, preventing me from shooting. Great layout of controls, quite easy to use, awesome in low light. WHEN IT WORKS!!!

Comments | [11/28/08] Had CPS send me one after being told that any Mark III you use now has had it's problems fixed. Used it for the Giants-Cardinals game on 11/23/08. I was weary so I used Mark IIN camera as main camera body til I got some images I really needed. Then switched to the Mark III, Possibly the worst camera I've ever picked up. rarely tack sharp,(oh yeah the high ISO is nice, but if it's not sharp, big deal.) even on stationary objects. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

Comments | [10/22/08] I have had two (2) for over a year now, whilst they seemed to have slight issues to begin with it was nothing that gave bad results, all that has since been sorted with firmware updates and sub-mirror fixes, everything the camera offers is superb, from build quality, ergonomics, IQ, custom function options, the main area i am most impressed though is metering and how spot on it is and colour rendition which is just stunning. I wouldnt want another camera, aside from maybe the 1DsMarkIII ;)

Comments | [10/21/08] Maybe Rob Galbraith should borrow my camera, because I'm completely blown away with it. My AF is fantastic! This could be the best camera I've ever used! Not to mention the fact that I got it free from Canon after they threw in the towel trying to fix one of my Mark II N's, which makes it even better! Thanks Canon! I'll admit I was little nervous when they offered it to me based on everything we've heard. I'm only giving it a nine out of ten because of the confusing way of re-arranging the menus and controls Canon did to the camera.

Comments | [12/31/07] I now own 5 of these and could not be happier with the camera. Sure it had issues in the beginning, but all the firmware updates I have uploaded have seemed to correct this issue for me. I love the speed, the larger viewfinder area (good for showing customers quick peeks on a gig). I love the higher buffer rate while shooting in RAW, the battery life is amazing compared to the MarkIIn's I own. I have not had focusing issues since the firmware updates. The sRAW feature is nice if you are shooting a low res Job where you will not to print something larger than 11x14, but still like the RAW versatility. Colors and image quality are definitely a plus for me with the DIgIC III chip. Honestly all in all, with the current firmware, I can't say I have any issues with this model camera. Definitely a good run against Nikon's D3...which is nice with it's full frame capability.

Comments | [10/25/07] Had serious AF tracking problems out of the box, recently sent in to CPS and they took care of everything. AF tracking is now great. Battery seems to last forever, and the camera performs exceptionally well in low light at high ISO (very little noise). Not a big fan of the enlarged screen -- would've been fine if they increased the resolution of the screen.

Comments | [09/30/07] I got an early one which crashed and burned in error-99 land, but CPS fixed me right up and I've shot 3- SEC football games, a huge wedding, and about 5 portraits with it. Battery life is awesome, image quality is very high, low light performance blows everything away I've ever seen, and the AF speed is awesome. Bright sunlight is still a bit tricky but I'm making that work too; this camera has a learning curve because in many ways it is a total departure from what's come before. All in all, I'm very impressed and have already sold all three of my Mark II bodies. C'mon in... the water is fine... pm-r :)

Comments | [08/28/07] After using for almost 1 month now I'd rate it at 7. Unfortunately, Canon has forced me to discard anything I learned using the MkIIn or any previous models. I'm having good luck with the focusing, shooting motorsports. Though better results in early and late light. The higher the sun gets, the poorer the focusing results. This is also true with the previous models. The high ISO looks great. I would sum up my dissapointment with the changes in button placement and function by saying when I buy a new model car, the gas is still on the right and the brake is still on the left. Are you listening Canon?

Comments | [08/25/07] This camera is the cat's meow when it comes to low light. Shooting stage with this camera and my 1.8 200 using AI Servo on high, virtually no OOF and pictures are stunning and colors fantastic.

Comments | [08/09/07] Jaw-dropping low light performance is a big plus, but the AF tracking is so disappointing that this camera will do backup duty behind its predecessor.

Comments | [08/07/07] I was a Nikon user untill I made the switch to Canon. I got to say the night shooting is great the responce is great but for almost 5k you would think it would FOCUS correctly. I am still figuring out some stuff but overall a 7.5 and a 10 for quality of image. I hope they come out with some more firmware to where it fixes this problem.

Comments | [08/04/07] Overall I'd give this camera a 6 out of 10 for the first batch. I received mine and set it up like a normal 1DMarkII. After shooting about 1000 frames, I started to get the ERROR99 and would have to shut the camera off to reset it. I changed cards and lenses and got the same result. I sent the brand new ERROR99 warning but now have a hard time with the autofocus. This camera simply won't track like a MarkIIN. I have upgraded the firmware to 1.1.0 and the problem persists.... Keep the MarkIIN until Canon can get a working model that everyone can agree on.....Sorry for the truth!

Comments | [06/05/07] Great camera. The screen is amazingly huge. Bigger than some small point and shoot cameras. The buttons are in different places but seems like after you learn where everything is, it might be easier. Image quality is amazing. Even though you only have 2 mega pixels more than the Mark II, you will see a big difference. Live view is a great feature. Hard to focus until you zoom in, then its easy. Its the camera that sets a new standard.
