David Eulitt's Message: The word "unbelievable" is a cliche, its meaning has become overused to the point where it means nothing, an easy adjective used too often to embellish something that usually is quite believable.

The complete annihilation by an EF-5 tornado with winds over 200 mph in Joplin, Missouri's central core last Sunday can only be described as "not believable," or as one of our Star reporters muttered, "this is Hell's Gate."

Over 6,000 structures, most of which were completely obliterated, covered a six-mile path of wood, nails, trees, shingles, concrete, steel and brick. 139 people died in the tornado, more than 100 are still listed as missing.

I spent four days in Joplin documenting with the Kansas City Star team how the city reacted to the devastation.
