THE WORKSHOPS
The Mountain Workshops are two concurrent programs — the Photojournalism Workshop and the Picture Editing Workshop. The Photojournalism Workshop offers a hands-on learning experience in documentary-style photojournalism. Participants shoot picture stories about people of the selected county and receive intensive critiques from nationally recognized professional visual journalists.
HISTORY
The shooting division of The Mountain Workshops began with just a handful of Western Kentucky University photojournalism students. The idea was to get them out of the classroom and into the field for practical shooting experience. As its reputation grew, the workshop drew working professionals looking to get back to their photojournalistic roots and hone their skills. The workshop is now over 20 years old and has attracted professional participants from the United States and abroad.
OBJECTIVES
Participants shoot a complete picture story while working on shooting techniques, interpersonal and storytelling skills.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop provides an intensive learning opportunity. It inspires and motivates visual journalists in the documentary photojournalism spirit and provides an opportunity to discover a fresh perspective in their work.

[05/27/05] The Cave City week was a spiral of passion, skill, camaraderie, and though it is not on the bill, a sense of emmense competition. Seems pretty natural when you have the coaches, some of the world's best shooters looking at everyone's takes daily, of course you want to dazzle them. It is humbling to have to show a weak hand as you are pushed to break new ground. Your coach will put your worst images up at some point, it's part of the rite of passage.
The Mnt. Workshop is like the Missouri photo workshop in many ways, but in this one you pull your assignment blindly from a hat on the first night. In Missouri, the workshop is a few days longer because you have to find your own story and pass muster with your coaches (three, not one) to do it. A nice payoff with the Mountain Workshops is that some of the work gets published in their annual book. It's a big deal to make it into the book.
I attended my second Mtn. Workshop last year. It felt pretty good to see some familiar faces and get such a warm reception. I'm champing at the bit to go again, would be a dream come true to make it a lifetime annual event.
Oh, one more thing, don't count on getting much sleep during either workshop. |

[10/06/02] I just got back today from the most amazing workshop i have ever attended. The website is now completely updated and I really recommend checking it out. This could be the best body of work I have ever seen produced from the workshop. Here are a few of my comments about it:
-its sooooo nice to wake up and only have to think about taking pictures all week
-the faculty is amazing(my "coach" this year was Vince Musi from National Geographic/Time magazine, but others included Vince Laforet from the NY times, Brian Plonka (POY), Pete Souza from Chicago tribune, among many others.
-it was all digital this year which gave us more time to be critiqued
-THE PHOTO STORIES WERE AMAZING
-we all helped each other and it feels like a big family (much like WKU PJ dept) :)
-its a good mix of students and pros that are divided into small groups each night
-the website is really nice and includes personal galleries of your work from the week. Really a good way to get your name out there.
-they also produce a beautiful book later on that they try to get everyone's work into
I am still taking it all in but I know that I personally grew so much this week. Not only as a photographer but as a person. It pushed me to go farther. I would HIGHLY recommend this workshop to anyone with an interest in storytelling. Would be glad to answer any questions.... |
