[12/27/04] The 2005 version is rolling around the last weekend in February, and this will be my fourth consecutive trip to it. It is the only conference that I am not only interested in, but axcited about. Some great photographers have been there in the past, and the coming event includes Nikon's heavy hitter -- sports shooter Dave Black (who I met at the Rich Clarkson Sports workshop and was extremely impressed with).
I HIGHLY recommend the conference, and it is a bargain rate too! |

[02/09/04] For me, this is the conference that I will try and make every year. I have made some long time friends from it, but take home something every year from it that is unforgetable.
I encourage everyone that can get there, to go!!!!! |

[02/08/04] In 1985 I met a new friend who has not only impacted my life but literally thousands. I met Jim Veneman who was in a similar position to mine. I was working for The Commission magazine and Jim was working for the group, which published most of the materials for the Southern Baptist, the Sunday School Board. We immediately thought not only should we get together, but let’s get all the Baptist photographers together. So, we managed to get Don Rutledge, Joanna Pinneo, Mark Sandlin, Warren Johnson, Paul O’bregon and Jim Veneman together at a cabin in the mountains of North Carolina. We continued getting together annually and invited speakers like Tom Kennedy and William Allard to join us for input. Jim saw this community could grow and he along with Morris Abernathy put together the Southwestern Photojournalism Conference.
Now just change the word Baptist to Sports Shooter and there are some very similar parallels between the two groups. A great desire to create community and exchange of ideas. This group just believes there is more guiding our lives than photography.
Throughout my career I have had to struggle understanding the difficulties, which this profession tossed me into. This conference has become to me the oasis from the world. I am with people who not only do what I do for a living; they also care about not putting photography before their families. They care about their images changing people’s lives for the better. They believe photography to be a calling.
Come and see for yourself. See if this group is for real. Maybe you will discover another community like Sports Shooter, which not only embraces your mind and body, but your soul as well. |

[02/04/04] Heres my offering re SWPJC.
It's the only conference I've been to other than our own Luau that has none of the haughtiness, egomania, and "look at me" attitude that you seem to get at short courses from what Bert calls the "four-letter organization."
Regardless of the misgivings some may have about the religious component of the conference, I think you will find that if you go, you will not regret it.
There are great ( I can't emphasize that enough ) people that run this thing that really make sure you are getting what you need from it.
There is a religious component to this - it's sponsored by the the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and supported by Christians in Photojournalism, but in no way is it something that you will feel awkward about.
Our own (the SF Chron's) Gary Fong has spoken at this conference, and is the President/Founder of CIP, but none of these folks will be in your face trying to "convert you" or anything like that. You may find that you really love the extra religious/philosophical component to this conference, as I have. It tries to go much deeper than just photos, and does that very well.
There is plenty of opportunity to spend some private time with the speakers - as opposed to most conferences - and therefore you can always get the answers to your questions directly from the people you want to learn from.
The LA Times' Anacleto Rapping has spoken here before - and I can tell you his presentations are always excellent.
When you really feel all of the power to communicate that can come from doing photojournailsm - you know it takes you deeper into yourself than f-stops and pixels.
This is the conference that gets it, and goes to that feeling.
Go - you'll really appreciate what it has to offer. |
