The Churchill Downs Workshop will be going on hiatus in 2007. Do to circumstances beyond their control they will be taking the
year off with plans to make the following year bigger and better.
The annual Collegiate Sports Journalism Seminar is a tuition-free program held in conjunction with the media build-up to the Kentucky Derby each year.
Forty of the nation's top student journalists and photojournalists, who have an interest in a career in sports journalism and sports photography, will be chosen to participate in this three-day event, the last week of April every year, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The seminar takes place one week prior to the Kentucky Derby.
Students will have the opportunity to observe and interact with professional sports writers, photographers and broadcast journalists as they prepare to cover the Kentucky Derby. Students will also participate in a daylong sports journalism workshop, allowing them to practice their craft against the backdrop of one of the nation's largest sporting events.
Past and current speakers include SportsShooter.com members Bill Frakes, Rick Rickman, Mike Corrado, Lucas Gilman, Dave Black and Skip Dickstein.

[05/03/06] Shooting alongside such talented photographers for a week in one of the nation's most photogenic sporting venues will really kick your photography up a couple of notches. Wonderful instructors, staff, students, and location make this workshop a must-do for any collegiate shooter. |

[03/22/06] Literally 24 hours a day of intense learning, shooting and growing as a photojournalist. Tons of talented instructors and shooters giving lessons, demonstrations and one-on-one mentoring. |

[05/03/05] An amazing experience. Life, eye, and direction changing. The shear passion withing the staff for the raw craft of photography overflows throughout the students. Overwhelmed by oportuinities to learn, make new images, and people that genuinly care about the industry you can't help but get better. |

[09/14/04] I've been to several different workshops, but the one at Churchill Downs was hands-down the best. I really enjoyed the fact that the workshop was restricted to 20 students. This allowed the students to get to work together and know each other much better, so the workshop was more of a workshop and less of a competition. It also allowed the students to interact with the faculty much more and develop great relationships with them. Plus, Churchill Downs is gorgeous, even in the pouring rain. |

[02/11/04] One of the best shooting workshops I've been in, it was my first meeting with Joe McNally after admiring his work in numerous magazines since I just a little 13 year old just starting photography. Listening to the words of Rickman, Dan Dry, McNally, Skip Dickenstien, Lucas Gilman and all these great instructors and speakers was just hard to beat. Even the students there inspired me, like Justin Fowler, Yuli Wu, Aaron Kehoe, Shannon Savage, Scott Burton, and many others- The stables are like a big playground for photographers, you see different types of lighting, different types of emotions, you met a lot of great people working at Churchill Downs.
It's a MUST for any student along with the Eddie Adams Workshop and other workshops, but be prepared to sleep very little but also be prepared to leave Louisville with new wealth of knowledge and a new motiviation to bust your butt on every shoot you take, no matter what. |

[02/11/04] I put this right up there with the Mountain workshop as far as shooting workshops go. Made some great friends that I still keep in contact with today. Where else are you going to get a 2 hour lighting demo from Joe McNally with only 3 people in the class.Dave Black, Rick Rickman, Bill Frakes, all great guys and willing to impart their years of experience on young photographers. Another bonus, 90 percent of speakers and participants are SS members...its like a KY Luau. |

[02/11/04] This was truley the most educational experiance I have ever had. It was the first time I had ever toyed with Digital, and I captured some amazing images. I wish I could go again, if you have the chance, DO NOT PASS IT UP, it will make you a better photographer!

[08/19/03] Okay, so it's a few months since I was there, but since that time, I have had the opportunity to talk to so many great professionals that were there. Where else will you get to work with great pros such as Bill Frakes, Rick Rickman, Lucas Gilman, Dave Black Skip Dickstein, Joe McNally. And many others. I have kept in touch with other students that I will be working with for years to come. I did not know much about photography before I went there, but I learned more in the few days that I was there then I have in my life. Thanks to the workshop I joined SportsShooter and everyone knows the benefits from this site. |

[05/08/03] This is absolutely one of the coolest events that I have ever been to. First of all, being able to shoot for a week at Churchill Downs is worth the trip. Then when you throw in the professionals that come and teach, it is just too good to pass up. Every student should apply to this workshop. |

[05/04/03] I attended in 1999. The best part is waking up before dawn and walking in the backside where they warm the horses and cats roam in and out of the barns. I learned how to treat the horses, never knew there was a way, and proper etticate for shooting races. Never hurts to know about the sport of horse racing. And it's free. Just get yourself there, and room. |
