Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop
When? | Early June
Where? | Muncie, IN
Rating | 10
Notes | The workshop is aimed at developing the integrated journalist with a strong emphasis on the visual presentation. Modern news organizations demand that all journalists be skilled and experienced in the use of photographs, layout, visual effects and their integration with other journalistic messages. All editors with picture responsibilities need to have a broader understanding of ethics and of newsroom relationships and to have a better grasp of the management ability to put changing elements together.

Applicants:
The Kalish workshop has been directed at those mid-career professionals who are coming new to the picture desk. But increasingly it is attracting other newsroom staffers who handle visuals as section editors, or higher supervisory editors, who gain equally and create better cooperative teams in their newsrooms.

Selection of Applicants:
Kalish participants are selected for a class "mix." Experience has shown that we have had excellent distribution of participants in sex, race, ethnic origin and age, as well as in different levels of photographic or newsroom experience (several news and section editors).

Statement by Applicant:
Each applicant must submit a brief statement of background and reason for applying. Do not, for instance, come only to learn a technology. We use only enough technology to make visual judgments quickly and without mechanical inhibitions.

Timing of Application:
Those interested have until February 28, 2005 to apply. However, an early application will help indicate interest. Only 25 are admitted in each session, so don't delay in applying. Selection of applicants will be made, and those accepted (or deferred) will be so advised by March 15, 2005.

Workshop Cost:
The registration fee is $650. The optional InDesign day is an additional $150. Applications require a deposit ($100 for the Workshop; additional $25 for the InDesign day). Balance is due on May 1. (No refunds can be made after May 1.)

Comments | [06/18/09] I had the best time ever with a group of reporters at the 09 workshop. I wish I was a better writer, so I could put into words how highly I recommend this workshop. Below are a couple multimedia projects that help illustrate why it's so great... http://vimeo.com/5212256 http://vimeo.com/5194354

Comments | [07/03/03] I attended the first workshop in 1990. I was about to accept a posting to one of the photo-editing desks at The S.F. Chronicle and was wondering what the hell I was getting into. This workshop's talented, experienced faculty gave me the information I needed to survive those first few years, and put me in a position to excel. Day to day challenges and real-life situations are covered. Students can learn from some of the best editors in the biz: J. Bruce Baumann, Randy Cox, Bob Lynn, and of course Mary Jo and Bryan Moss to name just a few. They all gave me pearls of wisdom that prepared me for the newsroom.
