A creative fixture in the Hollywood art world, Douglas Kirkland's career as an award-winning photographer spans five decades and six continents and his archives contain some of the most internationally recognized and iconic photographs of our age, including the famous kiss between Diana Spencer and the Prince of Wales on the balcony of Buckingham Palace directly after their wedding. Spanning his impressive career from the 1960's through today, FREEZE FRAME (October 2007) showcases a unique insider's heretofore unpublished "look" into the film industry and features some of the most famous actors and cultural moments of our time.
Captured by Douglas Kirkland's unique artistic vision, FREEZE FRAME includes virtually every beloved movie star who has worked in the industry over the last half-century. Among the extraordinary images included here are photographs of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton caught in an embrace in 1963 on the set of The Sand Piper, Dudley Moore playing the piano in his home in 1982, and Moulin Rouge's on-set extravaganza in 2000. In addition to shooting all of Hollywood's major legends, he has also photographed some of the most magical moments in cinematic history, giving us behind-the-scenes glimpses at the makings of some of the greatest movies of all time.
Because of his renown, this photographer has had exceptional access to the most exciting movie studios, locations, sets, and luminaries, near and far. About the Author:
Born in Toronto, Douglas Kirkland worked in New York as an apprentice to Irving Penn before moving to Los Angeles in the 1970's. He has worked for Look Magazine and Life Magazine, where he photographed such icons as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, and Marlene Dietrich. He has worked on the sets of over 100 motion pictures, many of them now considered classics, such as and including 2001 A Space Odyssey and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Kirkland has lectured at such venues as the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. and the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. He has published ten books. Kirkland has been named "Photographer of the Year" by the PhotoImaging, Manufacturers, and Distributing Association (PMDA) and has received a Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography from the IPA in 2003 and The Golden Eye of Russia in April, 2006. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and business partner, Francoise.
