Them!
Title | Them!
Author | Starring: James Whitmore & Edmund Gwenn
Type | DVD
Rating | 9
Notes | That ol' cinematic devil the A-bomb has spawned a colony of giant murderous ants bent on destroying humanity in this, the seminal big bug movie (an obvious and oft-credited influence for Alien among countless others). The special effects may be dated, but this brilliantly rational-sounding film has held up wonderfully in all other regards, including some starkly effective location work in the high Arizona desert, a genuinely inspired sound design guaranteed to bring on the creepy-crawlies, and an unexpectedly dry sense of humor (mainly personified by Grade-A egghead scientist Edmund Gwenn). This is essential viewing for all those who consider themselves science fiction or horror fans. Heroic hardcase James Arness previously played for the other team as the titular character in The Thing from Another World.

Comments | [06/05/03] s ... not by any fault of my own (as I wrote in my column in the May Sports Shooter Newsletter). This is THE grand daddy of the "mutant insects take over the world" genre ... Most people these days will scoff at the simple "special effects" and the weapons used by the Army to combat the giant ants ... but with the lights out in the living room, the sound turned up loud on the DVD player ... this flick can scare the s**t out of you ... especially when you're 8-years-old growing up in Fresberg! A definite must rent for a cool Friday evening with your 10-year-old daughter! Bert The Big Kahuna. P.S. --- Watch for a bit part by Leonard Nimoy!
