This is the most complete monograph on the work of W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978), one of the heroes of American photojournalism. Beginning in the 1930s, working for Newsweek and other magazines, and then as a war correspondent in the Pacific in 1943-45, he created poetic photo essays of enormous and lasting impact. Drawing from Smith's own photographic archives and including illuminating texts, this comprehensive volume features more than 350 superb duotone reproductions of both famous and never-before-published images.

[11/30/02] If you haven't heard of Smith, this is the book you start with. If you know who Smith is, this book may fill in a few gaps as well.
To say this man was a little obsessed or a bit of a control freak would be an understatement, but once you look over his volume of work presented in this book, you will understand why.
Haven't you ever been disappointed with the time constraints or the layout of one of your projects? It wasn't any different for Smith. In this book you get to see his famous essays for Life and a slew of his personal projects. In each, we get a glimpse into Smith's quest for matching words and pictures to tell a complete story that best matched his personal vision. We also get to see how many times he took what was supposed to be a two-week assignment and then turned them into something beyond anyone's expectations.
This book is thick. Don't buy it unless you have a sturdy bookshelf or a big coffee table. It's a great resource book for teachers and students. This isn't a book about how to make friends, nor is a book about being efficient with your time. But this book will be inspiring for nearly every photographer out there. |
