Wet start
Image © D.M. Troutman 2006 || Salinas, CA - 3/12/06 – Despite heavy rain and slippery conditions, all 22 cars made it through the first corner in A1 Grand Prix’s first-ever rain race, a testament to the quality of the drivers in the series and the Herculean efforts of SCRAMP (Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula) to prepare the facility for racing on a freak weather weekend. By the end of the 30 minute sprint, which was conducted safely, the rain ended and sunshine came out on race cars and race fans alike. Team USA’s Bryan Herta (far left) would finish the sprint race in ninth place for two championship points, but later was forced to pull out of the feature race due to mechanical problems. “We battled with set-up for three days,” said Herta. “I (made) a tough choice and elected to pull out.”
