Standing start
Image © D.M. Troutman 2006 || Salinas, CA - 3/12/06 – The field takes the green flag for the A1 Grand Prix of Nations feature race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The “World Cup of Motorsport” was created last year by Sheikh Maktoum of Dubai in the spirit of global unity, in which 25 nations compete against each other in identical 520 horsepower formula cars, each painted in the colors of its home country. Race weekends include both a rolling start sprint race and a standing start feature race, and are held in eleven countries, with the championship awarded not to an individual driver but to the competing nation with the most points from all the races. At each venue, the countries “nominate” drivers to compete; as a result, team drivers can change from race to race and even during the course of the weekend’s activities. Only the feature race pays purse money, but the sprint race is run first and determines the grid for the feature event. Here Team France and Team Mexico battle for the lead from a standing start moments after the green in the feature event.
