"Hawkesville, ON"     [index] Next ->>
"A slice of heaven in the middle of a cornfield." That's how Gloria Gagnon, owner of Hawkesville's only variety store, describes her town. About 25 kilometres northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo, the tiny community is home to a unique blend of old order Mennonites and former city folk eager to escape the rat race. Hawkesville has had just one new road added to its map since 1851, yet still draws 200 people from neighboring communities to work alongside its own residents. It's a step back in time. The general store is closed on Sundays, when about half of the town's residents can be found in the Mennonite church. Any other day of the week, you're welcome to drop by the store for a coffee and some homemade summer sausage.
