First Place: "Emotional Homecoming"
Francis Gardler/Lincoln Journal Star | “I dreamed when I landed I would see my son,” said Tekoz, the mother of Barakat Al Bashar, crying in Hadi Pir’s embrace. According to Stars and Stripes, the U.S. military’s news service, Barakat Ali Bashar — known as “Andy” to troops — shielded an Army Special Forces soldier when a suicide bomber detonated his vest during a vehicle search near the Syrian border in September 2007. His last words to the soldier were: “Take care of my son. Take care of my wife.” Tekoz arrived at the Lincoln Airport Wednesday night, Dec. 19, 2018, with Barakat’s wife, son and other family members to begin a new life in the United States.
