A shaft of sunlight pierces the gloom as a June storn threatens Strawberry Hill. In 1579, Francis Drake anchored off these shores, naming the coast New Albion. Logbooks make particular note of the horrendous June weather. "Our meat, as soon as it was removed from the fire, would presently be frozen up, and our ropes and tackling in a few days were grown to that stiffness, that what three men before were able with them to perform, now six men, with their best strength and uttmost endeavor, were hardly able to accomplish; whereby a sudden and great discouragement seized upon the minds of our men." --Francis Fletcher, aboard Francis Drake's ship, "Golden Hind", 1579
