Tabitha recoils from a half-eaten first meal after being hospitalized on the day after Christmas. “I just want the food out of me!” she cries as her grandmother, Antoinette, tries to calm her. Tabitha needed to gain 10 pounds to get into an outpatient program for eating disorders in the Portland area. Exasperated, she admitted herself to Sacred Heart Medical Center, hoping to be confined until she gained the weight, but she left after five days because she feared the constant eating would kill her.
