Robert Shaw flew B-17 missions during World War II until an enemy shell exploded in his cockpit over France. Despite over 100 shrapnel wounds, he and his crew limped home to England, where he received numerous blood transfusions. After the war, he had one more mission: to donate as many pints of blood as he could--more than 90 pints in the past 40 years.
